Spotted
The Eastern Bristlebird is a secretive, ground-dwelling species found in fragmented coastal heaths and woodlands of eastern Australia. Like its western counterpart, it features prominent bristles around its bill and prefers dense vegetation. It is a highly sought-after bird by twitchers due to its elusive nature and endangered status.
Where to spot
Found in fragmented populations along the coast of southeastern Australia, from Queensland to Victoria, primarily in heathlands, grassy woodlands, and sedgelands.
How to spot
Listen intently for its distinctive, loud, ringing calls, which are often the only way to detect it. Be patient and wait silently near dense cover at dawn or dusk. Avoid disturbing its habitat.
When to spot
Observable year-round, but best sought during the breeding season (spring to early summer) when males are more vocal. Dawn and dusk are prime observation times.

Despite being largely flightless, Eastern Bristlebirds are known to run incredibly fast through dense undergrowth when disturbed.
