The Cattle Tyrant is a distinctive and highly terrestrial tyrant flycatcher found across much of South America. It is often seen foraging on the ground, frequently associated with livestock.
Where to spot
Widespread across South America, from Colombia and Venezuela south to Argentina, and also found in Trinidad. Prefers open grasslands, pastures, savannas, and agricultural areas, especially where livestock are present.
How to spot
Look for this striking black-and-yellow bird walking or running on the ground, often near cattle. Its bold yellow underparts and black upperparts with white wing patches are unmistakable. It has a distinctive, somewhat upright posture.
When to spot
Resident year-round in most of its range. Easily seen throughout the day, particularly when foraging in open fields.
