Spotted
An extremely rare and critically endangered ibis, endemic to the island of São Tomé off the coast of West Africa. It is a small, dark ibis adapted to dense forest habitats.
Where to spot
Dense primary forest and secondary growth, primarily in São Tomé. Sightings are extremely rare and localized.
How to spot
Requires immense patience and expert knowledge of its habitat. Look for a small, dark ibis in very dense forest undergrowth. Often detected by call rather than sight.
When to spot
Year-round, but highly elusive. Best chance is during the dry season when birds might be more concentrated around water sources.
