Spotted
Doria's Goshawk is a large, unique raptor of New Guinea's rainforests, characterized by its long legs and heavy bill. It is an elusive and powerful predator.
Where to spot
Endemic to New Guinea and a few nearby islands (e.g., Batanta). It inhabits tropical moist lowland forests, often preferring areas with mature trees.
How to spot
An exceptionally challenging bird to find. Listen for its distinctive calls deep within the forest. Look for its robust shape and heavy bill if you manage a sighting.
When to spot
Active during daylight hours, but very difficult to observe due to its secretive nature and dense habitat. Likely most active during early morning.
Unlike many goshawks, Doria's Goshawk primarily hunts large reptiles such as monitor lizards and snakes, using its strong legs and bill to dispatch its prey.
