The Crested Tit is a charming and easily recognizable tit species, famed for its distinctive spiky, black-and-white striped crest. This small, resident bird is typically found in coniferous forests and is known for its relatively tame and inquisitive nature.
Where to spot
Primarily found across temperate Europe, extending into parts of Russia. Its preferred habitat is coniferous and mixed woodlands, particularly those with pine, spruce, or fir trees.
How to spot
Its prominent, pointed crest is unmistakable. Look for its small size and patterned head. Listen for its purring, trilling 'ziz-ziz-ziz' calls. They are often quite approachable and can be seen foraging on bark or branches.
When to spot
Present year-round throughout its range as it is a sedentary species. They are active during daylight hours, often foraging busily.

Crested Tits often nest in tree holes, but unlike many other tits, they prefer to excavate their own nest cavities in decaying wood, a behaviour more typical of woodpeckers.
