Spotted
The Crested Coua is a striking and vocal cuckoo species endemic to Madagascar, easily identified by its prominent crest and vibrant blue facial skin. Unlike many other cuckoos, it is a non-parasitic species, raising its own young.
Where to spot
Inhabits dry deciduous forests, spiny forests, and wooded savannas across western and northern Madagascar.
How to spot
Look for it moving actively through mid-level vegetation or on the ground. Its presence is often first revealed by its distinctive, often harsh and repetitive calls, which are quite loud and can help pinpoint its location even when hidden by foliage.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Most active during the day, particularly in the mornings and late afternoons when foraging for food.
