Spotted
Couch's Kingbird is a distinctive kingbird found in the southern United States and northeastern Mexico. It is closely related to and often confused with the Tropical Kingbird.
Where to spot
Found in extreme southern Texas (USA) and northeastern Mexico. Inhabits riparian woodlands, mesquite thickets, and open areas with tall trees, often near water.
How to spot
Visually almost identical to the Tropical Kingbird (yellow belly, olive-grey back, black bill). Therefore, identifying this species relies almost entirely on its distinctive, often burry or rolling calls, which differ significantly from the Tropical Kingbird's sharper notes.
When to spot
Resident year-round in most of its range, though some northern birds may move south. Most active during the morning and late afternoon.

The best way to distinguish Couch's Kingbird from the nearly identical Tropical Kingbird is through its vocalizations, which are distinctly different.
