The Coppery Sunbird is a brilliant species, with males displaying dazzling iridescent coppery-red and green plumage. It is a common and widespread bird across much of sub-Saharan Africa.
Where to spot
Widespread across sub-Saharan Africa, inhabiting savannas, woodlands, forest edges, gardens, and cultivated areas, from Senegal to Ethiopia and south to South Africa.
How to spot
Look for its brilliant, shimmering coppery plumage as it feeds on nectar. Its energetic, high-pitched song and rapid movements are good indicators of its presence.
When to spot
Active throughout the year. Most visible during early mornings and late afternoons. Easily observed at flowering plants and nectar feeders.
The 'coppery' color of the male's plumage shimmers with a fiery red and orange iridescence in direct sunlight, resembling polished copper, making it truly stand out.
