Spotted
This hybrid is a result of interbreeding between the Grey Teal and the Chestnut Teal, two common Australian dabbling ducks. Hybrids often present a unique mix of features, making them a challenge for identification.
Where to spot
Found in wetlands, lakes, and coastal areas across southern and eastern Australia where both Grey Teal and Chestnut Teal populations overlap.
How to spot
Look for a duck that is intermediate in coloration between the dull grey-brown of a Grey Teal and the richer chestnut of a Chestnut Teal. Features such as bill shape, eye color, and speculum might also show mixed characteristics.
When to spot
Observable year-round in areas where both parent species are present. Look out for them in mixed flocks.

Although both parent species are distinct in typical adult male plumage, females can be harder to distinguish, and hybrids add another layer of complexity to identification.
