A graceful, swallow-like wader that hunts insects on the wing, often over open plains and wetlands. It has long, pointed wings and a short bill, well-adapted for aerial feeding.
Where to spot
Breeds across southern Europe, North Africa, and parts of Asia. Winters in sub-Saharan Africa. Found in open, often dry, habitats near water, such as steppes, salt marshes, and cultivated fields.
How to spot
Look for its agile, aerial hunting style, resembling a large swallow or tern. Identify by its short bill, black eye-stripe and collar enclosing a creamy throat, and chestnut underwing linings visible in flight.
When to spot
Breeding season is from April to July. Migrates south from August to October, returning north in March-April.
