The Rufous-bellied Monjita is a large, distinctive flycatcher of southern South America, characterized by its clean grey upperparts and contrasting rufous underparts.
Where to spot
Open grasslands, steppes, and barren areas in Patagonia (southern Chile and Argentina). Some populations migrate northward in austral winter.
How to spot
Look for the clear contrast between its grey back and rufous belly. It often perches on fence posts, rocks, or low shrubs in open country. It has a strong, direct flight.
When to spot
Best observed during the austral summer (October-March) in its breeding grounds.
