The Chimango Caracara is a highly adaptable and common raptor of southern South America, found in a wide variety of open and semi-open habitats. It is primarily a scavenger but also preys on small animals and insects.
Where to spot
Open grasslands, agricultural areas, urban fringes, and scrublands across southern South America, particularly Chile, Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, and parts of southern Brazil.
How to spot
Look for its brownish plumage with paler underparts and a relatively plain head compared to other caracaras. Often seen walking on the ground, scavenging, or perched on low structures. Its call is a harsh, screaming sound.
When to spot
Active throughout the day. Very common and easily observed, especially near human settlements or areas with livestock. Observable year-round.
