A distinctive apalis with a striking rufous or reddish-brown throat and upper breast, contrasting with a grey head, olive-green back, and white belly.
Where to spot
Tropical moist lowland forests and dense secondary growth in West and Central Africa.
How to spot
Look for the rufous throat patch. It is an active insectivore, moving quickly through dense foliage. Listen for its high-pitched, often buzzing or trilling calls.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Most active in the mornings. Breeding often coincides with the local wet season.
The Rufous-throated Apalis is often found in dense forest undergrowth, where its rufous throat patch can be a helpful, albeit fleeting, identification mark.
