The Boulder Chat is a unique thrush species of Southern Africa, characterized by its plain brownish-grey plumage and a distinctive habit of hopping among large rocky outcrops and boulders. Its posture is often upright.
Where to spot
Endemic to parts of Southern Africa, including Zimbabwe, Mozambique, and South Africa, exclusively inhabiting areas with extensive granite or sandstone boulders and rocky outcrops.
How to spot
Look for a plain, stout thrush-like bird in rocky, open habitats. Observe its behavior of hopping among boulders. Listen for its short, whistling calls.
When to spot
Most active during the early morning and late afternoon. Resident and observable year-round.
