Spotted
The Bougainville Dwarf Kingfisher is a tiny, stunning kingfisher endemic to Bougainville Island in the Solomon Islands. It boasts a brilliant blue crown, rufous underparts, and a red bill, making it a highlight for birders.
Where to spot
Endemic to Bougainville Island (Papua New Guinea). Primarily found in lowland rainforests, often near small streams and damp ravines.
How to spot
Look for its minute form perching low in the dense forest undergrowth. Its bright colors can be elusive, but a patient search might reveal it. Listen for its high-pitched, quick calls.
When to spot
Resident year-round. Active during daylight hours. Best observed in the mornings and late afternoons.
This species is particularly sensitive to forest disturbance, making its presence a good indicator of healthy, intact lowland rainforest ecosystems.
