Spotted
Blyth's Kingfisher is a large and elusive kingfisher of Southeast Asia, known for its dark, iridescent blue upperparts and rufous underparts. It is a shy denizen of clear, fast-flowing forest streams.
Where to spot
Found in forested regions of Southeast Asia, including parts of India, Nepal, Myanmar, Thailand, and Indonesia. Prefers clear, rocky forest streams and rivers.
How to spot
Patience is key for spotting this secretive kingfisher. Look for it perched silently on overhanging branches along forest streams, waiting to dive for fish. Its deep blue color can blend with shadows, but its large size helps.
When to spot
Resident year-round. Best observed during the drier seasons when water levels are lower and birds may be more concentrated. Active during daylight hours.
