Spotted
This hybrid arises from the interbreeding of the Blue-winged Teal and the Eurasian Teal. It is an uncommon occurrence, resulting in a bird that displays a mix of features from both parent species, making it a unique identification challenge for birdwatchers.
Where to spot
Primarily occurs where vagrant Eurasian Teals appear in North America, or vice-versa, allowing for contact with Blue-winged Teals. Look in shallow freshwater wetlands, ponds, and marshes.
How to spot
Focus on head and bill characteristics. A male hybrid might show a partial white crescent of the Blue-winged Teal mixed with hints of the Eurasian Teal's head pattern. The presence of the large blue wing patch (distinctive to Spatula species) combined with the small size of Anas crecca suggests a hybrid.
When to spot
Most likely encountered during spring and autumn migration periods, or in wintering grounds where both parent species may rarely overlap.
The Blue-winged Teal is known for undertaking one of the longest migrations among North American dabbling ducks, often wintering as far south as South America. Hybridization with a Eurasian species is thus a notable event.
