A beautiful cotinga species found in the humid lowland forests of northwestern South America. The male is a vivid iridescent blue on its upperparts with a contrasting purple throat and belly.
Where to spot
Humid lowland and foothill rainforests in Colombia, western Venezuela, and eastern Panama.
How to spot
Look in the canopy and upper mid-story of tall forest trees. The male's brilliant blue back and purple underparts are key identification features. They are generally silent.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Best observed during early mornings when actively feeding on fruits.
Like many cotingas, this species is frugivorous, playing a vital role in dispersing seeds of rainforest trees.
