Spotted
The Black-throated Antshrike is a medium-sized antshrike characterized by a distinct black throat in males. It is a resident of humid lowland and foothill forests.
Where to spot
Dense undergrowth and mid-story of humid lowland and foothill evergreen forests, across northern Amazonia (e.g., Brazil, Venezuela, Colombia).
How to spot
Listen for its distinctive, accelerating 'chip-chip-chip-CHIP!' call. Scan the mid-story and understory, especially looking for mixed-species flocks. Males are identifiable by their black throat.
When to spot
Resident year-round. Most active in the early morning and late afternoon. Calls are frequent, especially during the breeding season.
This species often joins mixed-species foraging flocks, moving deliberately through the mid-story and understory in search of insects.
