Where to spot
Widespread in savannas and grasslands of southern and eastern Africa, often preferring rocky or sparse areas.
How to spot
Look for it walking on the ground through short grass. If flushed, it flies low and fast. Patience is needed, as it prefers to stay hidden.
When to spot
Year-round. Most easily seen during the breeding season when males sing from exposed perches, but otherwise very shy.
Quailfinches are known for their secretive, quail-like behavior, often flushing abruptly from grass and flying short distances before dropping back into cover.
