Spotted
The Black-and-white Bulbul is a strikingly patterned species with a bold black and white plumage, making it stand out among its more drably colored relatives. It is a forest dweller, often seen high in the canopy.
Where to spot
Found in lowland rainforests and mature woodlands across parts of Southeast Asia, particularly on Sumatra and Borneo.
How to spot
Scan the upper canopy of tall forest trees. Its distinct plumage is a good visual cue, but patience is required as it can be high up and somewhat quiet.
When to spot
Year-round, as it is a resident species in its native range.
Its contrasting colors provide effective camouflage in the dappled sunlight and shadows of the forest canopy, making it surprisingly hard to spot despite its bold pattern.
