The Bay-breasted Warbler is a distinctive warbler. Breeding males have a striking chestnut (bay) cap, throat, and flanks, contrasting with a black face patch and white belly. Females and non-breeding birds are duller.
Where to spot
Breeds in the boreal forests of Canada and the northern United States. Winters in Central America and northern South America.
How to spot
Look in coniferous or mixed forests on breeding grounds. During migration, can be found in various deciduous and mixed woodlands. It often forages high in trees. Listen for its high-pitched, sharp "tsee-tsee-tsee" song.
When to spot
Best observed during spring (May) and fall (September-October) migration, when it can be found in a variety of wooded habitats. Present on breeding grounds in summer.
