Spotted
A beautiful sunbird, male Eastern Banded Sunbirds boast iridescent green upperparts, a dark throat, and a striking black band across the breast, contrasting with a yellow belly. Females are less vibrant.
Where to spot
Found in East Africa, specifically in the Albertine Rift region, inhabiting montane forests.
How to spot
Look for it visiting flowering trees in montane forests. The black chest band is its most distinctive feature, especially for males. Listen for its high-pitched, energetic calls.
When to spot
Active year-round, particularly in the morning and late afternoon when foraging for nectar.
The Eastern Banded Sunbird is often found alongside other sunbird species, but its distinct vocalizations and plumage patterns help in identification among mixed flocks.
