Spotted
The Ashy-headed Babbler is a medium-sized babbler found in parts of Southeast Asia. It is characterized by its ashy-grey head, contrasting with a rufous-brown body and a pale eye.
Where to spot
Found in Myanmar and parts of Thailand and China. Inhabits dense undergrowth of evergreen and mixed deciduous forests, often near streams or in damp areas.
How to spot
Listen for its quiet, bubbling, or chattering calls emanating from dense cover. Look for movements in the leaf litter on the forest floor. Its ashy-grey head is the most reliable identification feature.
When to spot
Resident year-round. Most active in the early morning and late afternoon. Often observed in small, cohesive groups.
This species often forages in the leaf litter, meticulously tossing aside leaves with its bill to expose hidden insects and other invertebrates.
