Spotted
The Plain Spectacled Laughingthrush is a medium-sized species with relatively plain brown plumage, distinguished by a subtle, pale eye-ring, giving it a 'spectacled' appearance. These social and vocal birds typically move in noisy groups through the undergrowth of forests. It is widespread across Southeast Asia.
Where to spot
Widespread across mainland Southeast Asia, including parts of China, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand, Myanmar, and Malaysia. It inhabits various forest types, including evergreen and deciduous, bamboo, and scrub, from lowlands to mid-elevations.
How to spot
Listen for their loud, distinctive, and somewhat 'laughing' calls. Look for groups actively foraging in the undergrowth or on the ground. The pale eye-ring is a subtle but key identification feature on its otherwise plain face.
When to spot
Resident throughout its range and observable year-round. Early morning and late afternoon are the most active periods for foraging and vocalizations.
This species is often referred to as the 'Spectacled Laughingthrush' in many regions, but 'Plain' or 'Common' is sometimes added to differentiate it from other species with similar features, particularly in the *Pterorhinus* genus.
