The African Hobby is a small, swift falcon found across much of sub-Saharan Africa, known for its agile aerial hunting of insects and small birds.
Where to spot
Open woodlands, savannas, forest edges, and cultivated areas across sub-Saharan Africa.
How to spot
Look for its relatively small size, dark grey upperparts, and rufous-red lower belly/thighs. Its flight is fast and dashing, often seen pursuing insects or small birds. It has a distinct dark malar stripe.
When to spot
Active during the day, particularly around dawn and dusk when prey is abundant. Observable year-round.

This hobby is incredibly acrobatic in flight, often catching insects mid-air with its talons and consuming them while still on the wing.
