Spotted
The Yellow-backed Weaver is a striking weaver bird, with a glossy black head and a vibrant yellow back, contrasting with a yellow belly. It is a common species of African rainforests.
Where to spot
Found in West and Central Africa, including Cameroon, Gabon, Democratic Republic of Congo, and Uganda. Inhabits lowland rainforests, forest edges, and clearings, often near water.
How to spot
Look for its glossy black head and prominent yellow back. They are often seen in pairs or small groups. Listen for their varied, often harsh, calls.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Breeding activity is most prominent during the rainy season, when males are in their brightest plumage and are actively building nests.
This species often builds its nests in small colonies, typically suspended from thin branches over water or clearings in the forest, making them relatively safe from predators.
