Whitehead's Rhabdornis is a striking species endemic to the high-altitude forests of Luzon in the Philippines. It is known for its distinctive plumage and foraging habits.
Where to spot
Endemic to the high mountains of Luzon Island in the northern Philippines. Inhabits montane and mossy forests, often at elevations above 1,000 meters.
How to spot
Look for its rather plain, dark plumage with subtle streaking, a long decurved bill, and a pale eye. It often forages by creeping up mossy tree trunks and branches, probing for insects. Its calls are high-pitched.
When to spot
Resident year-round. Active during the day. Best observed during the cooler months or mornings in high-altitude forests.
This species is named after British explorer and ornithologist John Whitehead, who extensively collected specimens in Southeast Asia.
