Spotted
The Mountain Fieldwren is a small, secretive, ground-dwelling bird found in the higher elevations of New Guinea. It has a streaky, cryptic plumage, perfectly camouflaged for the dense montane grasslands and shrublands it inhabits. Its presence is often revealed by its distinct song.
Where to spot
Endemic to the montane and alpine grasslands, shrublands, and forest edges of the central highlands of New Guinea, typically at elevations above 2,000 meters.
How to spot
Listen for its distinctive, often scratchy or trilling song. It is highly secretive, so look for quick movements in dense tussocks and low shrubs. Patience and quiet approach are vital.
When to spot
Observable year-round within its high-altitude habitat. Most active during the day, especially in the mornings.
This fieldwren is specifically adapted to the harsh conditions of high-altitude grasslands and alpine zones in New Guinea, a unique habitat for a bird of its family.
