Spotted
The Western Crested Berrypecker is a distinctive montane bird of New Guinea, closely related to its eastern counterpart. It features a prominent crest and soft, often yellowish-green plumage, foraging primarily on berries and fruits.
Where to spot
Endemic to the montane forests of western New Guinea (West Papua, Indonesia), found at high elevations. It inhabits the canopy and sub-canopy of cloud and mossy forests.
How to spot
Look for its crest and overall yellowish-green coloration. Scan fruiting trees in the montane canopy. Listen for its soft, whistled calls, which may be similar to its eastern relative. Patience is required due to its habitat.
When to spot
Active year-round in its high-altitude tropical habitat. Best observed during early mornings when birds are most actively feeding on fruits.
The 'montium' in its scientific name directly translates to 'of the mountains,' aptly describing its high-altitude habitat preference in New Guinea.
