The Black-naped Oriole is a common and highly conspicuous bird found across a vast range in Asia, known for its brilliant yellow plumage with a distinct black nape and eye-stripe. It is a highly vocal species.
Where to spot
Widespread across South Asia, Southeast Asia, and East Asia, from India to China and Indonesia. Inhabits open woodlands, parks, gardens, and cultivated areas with trees.
How to spot
Males are unmistakable with bright yellow plumage, a prominent black stripe from the bill through the eye to the nape, and black wings and tail. Listen for its loud, clear, and melodious flute-like calls.
When to spot
Year-round resident in most tropical parts, migratory in temperate regions. Most vocal during the breeding season (spring/summer), but active throughout the day.
