The Tumbes Tyrannulet is a small, relatively plain flycatcher, named for the Tumbes region of northwestern South America. It typically inhabits arid and semi-arid scrublands and dry forests.
Where to spot
Endemic to the Tumbes region of northwestern Peru and southwestern Ecuador, primarily in arid scrub and dry deciduous forests.
How to spot
Look for its small size and general dull grayish-brown plumage. It often perches quietly within thorny scrub or dry forest vegetation. Listen for its simple, repetitive calls.
When to spot
Resident year-round. Most active during the morning and late afternoon.
This species is a key indicator of the unique Tumbesian dry forest ecosystem, a biodiversity hotspot in western South America.
