Spotted
The Thick-billed Seed Finch is a robust, blackish seedeater with a notably large, powerful bill, found in humid lowlands of Central and northern South America.
Where to spot
Humid lowlands, forest edges, and dense second growth from southern Mexico through Central America to northern South America (Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru), generally below 1,000 meters.
How to spot
Look for its large, conical bill and overall dark plumage. It can be secretive in dense vegetation but occasionally perches conspicuously to sing. Its loud, whistled song is a good identifier.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Most active and vocal in the mornings, when it is more likely to be seen or heard.

Its scientific name 'funerea' refers to its dark, almost somber plumage, but its powerful bill is specifically designed for crushing tough seeds, a key adaptation for its diet.
