The Sulphur-bellied Flycatcher is a large and highly vocal migratory tyrant flycatcher that breeds in Central America and winters in South America. It is recognized by its bold streaking and bright sulphur-yellow belly.
Where to spot
Breeds from southeastern Mexico south through Central America to western Panama. Winters primarily in South America, from Colombia and Venezuela south to Bolivia and Brazil. Found in humid evergreen forests, forest edges, and second growth.
How to spot
Look for its overall olive-brown streaked appearance, contrasting with a bright sulphur-yellow belly and rufous in the wings and tail. It has a bold black eye-stripe and white supercilium. Listen for its distinctive, often rattling, vocalizations.
When to spot
Observed during breeding season (spring/summer) in Central America and during the non-breeding season (fall/winter) in South America. Can be seen during migration. Most active mornings and late afternoons.
