Spotted
The Strong-billed Woodcreeper is a very large and robust woodcreeper characterized by its powerful, straight bill. It uses this bill to excavate and pry open bark for large insects.
Where to spot
Widespread in humid lowland, foothill, and montane forests from southern Mexico south through Central and South America to Bolivia and Brazil.
How to spot
Look for its impressive size and powerful, straight bill as it climbs massive tree trunks. Listen for its loud, often far-carrying, whistling calls.
When to spot
Active year-round during daylight hours. Often observed foraging high in the canopy or on large trunks from morning to afternoon, sometimes with mixed-species flocks.

It is one of the largest woodcreepers, and its bill is strong enough to rip apart rotten wood to find beetle larvae and other large prey.
