The Streaked-breasted Saltator is a medium-sized songbird found in a broad range across Central and South America. It is characterized by its olive-green upperparts and pale underparts that are distinctly streaked with dark markings on the breast and flanks.
Where to spot
Widespread from Costa Rica south through Panama and across western South America, from Colombia to Peru and northern Bolivia. Inhabits humid forests, forest edges, clearings, and dense secondary growth, often near water.
How to spot
Look for its olive-green back and the key identification feature: distinct dark streaking on its pale breast. Listen for its varied, clear, whistled song, often a series of rapid notes. They are usually found foraging in the mid-story or lower canopy.
When to spot
Active year-round. Most vocal during the breeding season (varies regionally) and during early morning.
