Spotted
The Starred Robin is a distinctive forest bird, recognized by its dark olive-green upperparts and striking white spots ('stars') on its black underparts. It is a secretive inhabitant of montane forests.
Where to spot
Found in montane forests across East and Southern Africa, from Kenya and Uganda south to South Africa. It prefers dense, humid evergreen and mistbelt forests.
How to spot
Patience is key due to its shy nature. Look for its dark plumage and distinctive white spots. It often forages quietly on the ground, so listening for its soft, clear calls is essential.
When to spot
A resident species, observable year-round. Most active during the cooler parts of the day, particularly early morning and late afternoon, foraging on the forest floor.
Its unique 'starred' plumage provides excellent camouflage in the dappled light of the forest understory, helping it blend in with the leaf litter as it forages on the ground.
