The Southern Speckled Teal is the nominate subspecies of the Speckled Teal, found in the southern cone of South America. It is a common and adaptable duck, frequenting various freshwater environments.
Where to spot
Freshwater lakes, marshes, and ponds in southern South America, including Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, Paraguay, and parts of Brazil.
How to spot
Identify by its overall speckled brown plumage, bright yellow bill with a black tip, and small size. Pay attention to the subtle differences in speckling and bill coloration if trying to distinguish from other Speckled Teal subspecies.
When to spot
Can be observed year-round in its extensive southern range. Look for them feeding in shallow water during daylight hours, especially in the mornings and evenings.
This subspecies often nests in dense vegetation near water, with the female expertly camouflaging the nest and eggs.
