Spotted
The Shy Heathwren is a small, secretive ground-dwelling bird found in the mallee and heathlands of southern Australia. Its streaky brown plumage allows it to blend seamlessly into its dense shrubby habitat. It is known for its loud and far-carrying song, often the only sign of its presence.
Where to spot
Endemic to mallee, heathlands, and shrublands across inland southern Australia, from Western Australia to Victoria and western New South Wales.
How to spot
Listen intently for its distinctive, loud, ringing song. Patience is crucial as it remains hidden in dense vegetation. Try to spot it briefly as it pops up to sing or runs across a gap.
When to spot
Observable year-round, but most vocal during the breeding season (winter to spring) when males sing to defend territories. Active during the day.

Despite its 'shy' name, the male Shy Heathwren has a remarkably loud and complex song for its size, often given from atop a low bush.
