Spotted
The Rufous Cachalote is a large, rufous-brown ovenbird with a distinctive shaggy crest. It's often found in dry, open woodlands and scrublands.
Where to spot
Dry chaco and savanna woodlands, thorny scrub, and open forests in central South America, including Paraguay, Bolivia, and northern Argentina.
How to spot
Listen for its loud, far-carrying calls. Look for it foraging on the ground or in low branches. Its large size and shaggy crest are good identification markers.
When to spot
Year-round, with increased vocalizations during the breeding season. Best observed during early mornings and late afternoons.
