Spotted
The Rufous-backed Tailorbird is a small, active bird with a rufous crown and back, contrasting with its whitish throat and belly. It is an endemic resident of Mindanao.
Where to spot
Inhabits montane forests and dense scrub at higher elevations, exclusively on the island of Mindanao in the southern Philippines.
How to spot
Look for its rufous back and crown. Listen for its distinctive song, which helps differentiate it from other tailorbirds. It is active in the understory and mid-canopy.
When to spot
Observable year-round in its restricted island habitat. Most vocal during the local breeding season.
This species was once considered a subspecies of the Mountain Tailorbird but was later elevated to full species status based on genetic and vocal differences.
