Spotted
The Rufous-backed Antshrike is a medium-sized antshrike, named for its prominent rufous back and wings. It is a resident of humid montane forests.
Where to spot
Mid-story to canopy of humid montane and cloud forests, typically at higher elevations in the Andes (e.g., Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia).
How to spot
Listen for its distinctive, accelerating 'whip-whip-whip' call. Scan the mid-story and canopy. Often found in pairs, actively foraging. Good binoculars are helpful for canopy observation.
When to spot
Resident year-round. Most active in the early morning and late afternoon. Calls are frequent, especially during the breeding season.
This species is often found in the canopy and subcanopy, where it actively gleans insects from foliage, sometimes hanging upside down like a tit.
