Spotted
This hybrid results from a cross between the striking Ruddy Shelduck (Tadorna ferruginea) and the ubiquitous Mallard (Anas platyrhynchos). Like many waterfowl hybrids, it's typically found in captive settings or where feral populations of both species interbreed.
Where to spot
Most likely encountered in parks, zoos, or private waterfowl collections. Occasional feral individuals may be seen in urban or semi-wild aquatic environments where both parent species are present.
How to spot
Look for a bird with a blend of the Ruddy Shelduck's fiery orange-brown plumage and black bill/legs, mixed with features from a Mallard, such as a more duck-like body shape, speculum color, or hints of the Mallard's iridescent green head (in males). The plumage will be highly variable and likely intermediate.
When to spot
Year-round in captive or semi-feral environments.

Ruddy Shelducks are more goose-like in appearance and behavior compared to dabbling ducks like the Mallard, making this hybrid combination particularly distinct.
