Spotted
This hybrid results from a cross between a Blue-winged Teal and a Cinnamon Teal. Individuals often display a fascinating mix of plumage characteristics from both parent species, making identification a unique challenge.
Where to spot
Found in areas where the breeding ranges of Blue-winged Teals and Cinnamon Teals overlap, primarily in western North America. Look in freshwater marshes, ponds, and shallow wetlands.
How to spot
Look for a male that has some cinnamon wash but also retains strong white facial markings of a Blue-winged Teal, or a more muted cinnamon with less intense eye color. Female hybrids are extremely difficult to identify, often resembling either parent or being indistinguishable. Note any unusual plumage combinations.
When to spot
Most likely to be observed during the breeding season (spring to early summer) when both parent species are present and interbreeding may occur. Also possible during migration periods.
Hybrids can show a wide range of plumage variations, from appearing mostly like one parent with hints of the other, to a truly intermediate blend of features.
