Spotted
The Orinoco Negrito is a small, dark flycatcher native to northern South America. Males are largely black with a white wing patch, while females are browner.
Where to spot
Along the Orinoco River and its tributaries in Venezuela and Colombia, typically on sandy or gravelly riverbanks and islands.
How to spot
Scan the edges of rivers and sandbars for this dark bird. Look for the male's white wing patch, especially in flight. It often perches low and makes short sallies for insects.
When to spot
Can be observed year-round in its specific riverine habitat. Early morning and late afternoon are generally good times for bird activity.

Unlike many of its congeners which prefer open or rocky habitats, the Orinoco Negrito often frequents sandy or gravelly river beaches and islands within its range.
