Spotted
The Regent Bowerbird is a stunning bowerbird with males displaying glossy golden-yellow and black plumage, creating a striking contrast. It is native to the rainforests of eastern Australia.
Where to spot
Inhabits subtropical and temperate rainforests and wet sclerophyll forests along the eastern coast of Australia, from central Queensland to northern New South Wales.
How to spot
Look for the male's striking plumage near forest edges or fruiting trees. Locate the avenue bower on the forest floor, often meticulously arranged. Listen for its distinctive buzzing and churring calls.
When to spot
Active year-round, but display behavior peaks during the breeding season, typically from October to February, when males are most actively maintaining their bowers.
The male builds an 'avenue' type bower, typically decorated with shiny objects like snail shells, cicada exuviae, and occasionally blue or grey items, rather than bright yellow or orange ones, showcasing a unique preference.
