Spotted
The Redthroat is a small, secretive passerine bird found in the arid and semi-arid mallee and heathlands of inland Australia. Males possess a distinctive rufous-red throat patch, which gives the species its name. It is primarily a ground-forager, often heard singing from dense low shrubs.
Where to spot
Found in arid and semi-arid mallee, acacia scrub, and heathlands across inland southern Australia, from Western Australia to western New South Wales.
How to spot
Listen for its melodious, often mimetic song. It can be elusive, moving quickly through dense low vegetation. Look for the male's red throat patch. Patience and focus on vocalizations are key.
When to spot
Observable year-round. Most vocal during the breeding season (spring) and early mornings.
