Inhabits the understory of humid lowland forests across the western and central Amazon basin.
How to spot
Locate army ant swarms. This species is often very conspicuous near the ant front. The red facial skin and bright red wings are excellent field marks.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Best observed during early morning and late afternoon when army ants are active.
This species is an obligate army-ant follower, moving rapidly and boldly through the understory to catch prey flushed by ant swarms.
