Spotted
The Red-faced Oliveback is a small, inconspicuous finch native to the Albertine Rift montane forests of East-Central Africa. It is identified by its olive-green plumage and a subtle reddish wash on the face.
Where to spot
Endemic to the Albertine Rift, found in montane rainforests and secondary growth in eastern DRC, Uganda, and Rwanda.
How to spot
Search for it foraging among leaves and branches in the forest understory. Its small size and quiet nature require patience and a keen eye. Listen for soft contact calls.
When to spot
Year-round. It is often challenging to observe due to its shy nature and preference for dense vegetation.
Like other olivebacks, it is primarily an insectivorous finch, a departure from the largely granivorous diet of many other Estrildidae.
