Spotted
The Red-eyed Cowbird is a medium-sized, glossy black icterid with striking red eyes. It is known as an obligate brood parasite, often targeting oropendolas and caciques.
Where to spot
Found in northern South America, including Colombia, Venezuela, and parts of Brazil. Inhabits humid lowland forests, forest edges, and clearings, often near oropendola or cacique colonies.
How to spot
Look for its glossy black plumage with the distinct red eyes. Observe its behavior around active oropendola or cacique colonies. Listen for its complex, often guttural and gurgling calls.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Most active and conspicuous during the breeding season of its host species, when it seeks out nests to parasitize.

Unlike some other cowbirds, the Red-eyed Cowbird is somewhat specialized in its choice of host species, primarily focusing on large, colonial-nesting icterids.
